Courtney Wynn Sheets presented The MEMENTOMORIUM, a group exhibition that brings together a diverse group of artists who were drawn to exploring their ideas & feelings around what mortality, decomposition, aging, morbid anatomy, spirituality and death mean to them. There will be mixed media expressions including drawing, painting, collage, photography, sculpture, ceramics, dance and poetry. The idea for the show was inspired by the genre “memento mori” that was birthed in medieval times during the duration of the Black Plague. This gave people at that time a way to cope with the massive sudden death they saw happening around them. The latin phrase memento mori translates to “remember we will die.”

JUST RESTING YOUR EYESSolo Exhibition at cactusBARN
Curated by Leigh Anne Lester and Jayne Lawrence
On view March 2nd - May 13th, 2024

Just Resting Your Eyes was a site-specific exhibition exploring love, memory, and dreams across three generations. Inspired by her family folklore, Angela Guerra Walley’s multidisciplinary artworks are presented alongside family heirlooms to examine societal expectations of women, particularly after marriage. The title references a phrase Guerra Walley’s father, Luis Angel Guerra, used throughout her childhood and makes a connection between the many moments we all close our eyes - to daydream, embrace, kiss, weep, sleep, dream, and die.

For Their Absence & We Are Quilted Together

On view in Death Rights, a group show curated by Marian Casey
February 24th - March 23rd, 2024

My exhibition, For Their Absence, featured a trio of wooden furniture pieces - my late maternal grandfather’s round table he kept in the backroom of his business, Harlandale Cleaners, and an antique family coat rack and bookshelf found and given to me by my mother.

In Flowers for Dust, my collection of dried flowers from loved ones and my annual day of the dead altar were arranged on grandfather’s table in ten flower pots previously containing a plant I couldn't keep alive or I allowed to die. The installation examines my ability to be a capable caretaker as my grandmother was for her ten children.

Placed on the top of the bookshelf was Memory Impaired, my Alzheimer’s-stricken grandmother Petra's house dress made into a quilt as a way to honor and keep her memory. The shelves below featured my teenage poetry book opened to a poem written for my grandmother after her passing, her molcajete, and a stuffed bear soft sculpture I created from my baby blanket with the same pattern my mother used over thirty years ago to make toy bears for my sisters and I when we were children.

I quilted and hung my partner’s wedding suit on my antique family coat rack. The piece considers a black suit as clothing often used in both marriage and burial rituals. Placed on the coat rack the suit feels lonesome in waiting for the wearer to pick it up and put it on.

For Their Absence was on view in conversation with We Are Quilted Together, an installation of ten quilts made from my personal dress collection hung on a clothesline tied to the original poles from my Grandma Guerra’s former backyard.

Death Rights was a group exhibition presenting creators engaging with death, loss, remembrance, and the afterlife, from political, spiritual, and radical perspectives. Death Rights brings together a breadth of artists to radically reshape and reclaim our relationship to death.

	We Are Quilted Together
Artpace San AntonioMay 4 - September 3, 2023

My mother and grandmother crafted quilts and clothing for their families, so with my recent work I pay tribute to the lineage of women makers I come from. While admiring my late grandmother Petra Barrios Guerra’s patchwork quilt, I had the revelation that I’m also many disparate parts brought together. In her colorful fabrics I see my multiple selves: a filmmaker and photographer, a poet and songwriter, a maker and artist — all joined together in a peculiar harmony.
Over the last several years I’ve worn dresses almost exclusively, a significant shift from the tomboy style I’d had since childhood. I briefly pursued dressmaking, but I realized the most satisfaction I found was in ripping my worn dresses apart at the seams and sewing together textile collages from the pieces. Like my grandmother’s patchwork quilt, my resulting series of “quilt dresses” are made from fabrics readily available to me, cut apart, reconfigured, and sewn back together. They may visually take the form of dresses, but they are unwearable, fixed when quilted. Materially, the completed quilts are saturated with personal memories I have from once wearing the three to six different dresses they’re each made from and are a way of seeing my various selves together at once.

A phrase I often reflect on is, “making something from nothing”, which my father used to articulate my grandmother’s creativity with limited means. With this in mind, I’ve created my quilt dresses by repurposing nearly every dress in my closet. I’ve hung this series on a clothesline tied to the original poles from my grandmother’s former backyard in the southeast side of San Antonio. With this work I’m channeling the image of the dresses my grandma sewed for her five daughters and the quilts she made for her five sons hanging to dry on a long line across her yard and contemplating the striking contrast of her life as a mother of ten children to my life as a woman who has chosen not to have children. My work attempts to satisfy my desire to express maternal love through making, as the woman before me have, and answer the question, “Where does all that love go?”.

End of (Herr)EraJotoSeptiempre, Brick at Blue StarSeptember 8, 2023

End of (Herr)Era is an art installation honoring the history of creativity and craft in my family. This installation featured my series of ten Quilt Dress pieces, my Pillow Dress and Baby Blanket Bear soft sculptures, family photographs, my poetry book, and self-portraits in family photo frames featuring items included in the installation. The half circle of forty foot rope around the installation was previously used as the clothesline my quilted dresses were hung from in my work, We Are Quilted Together. The rope created a line of demarcation between the audience and the installation. The title refers to my Mother’s maiden name, Herrera, and my choice to be the only daughter of the last three generations who is not a mother.

JotoSeptiempre was a Photography Pop-up Art Show organized by José Villalobos at Brick at Blue Star.
